Another Thanksgiving Day is here!  It is time to tell GOD, family, friends why we are thankful.  It is right giving thanks for the present, however, reflecting on past blessings is also important. I remember many past Thanksgiving Days spent in Michigan when we would all gather for a day of fun!  How my Mom and Dad loved their large family as we were together, laughing, singing, telling stories and jokes.  The smell of the turkey and pumpkin pies in the oven filled the air!  We could not wait to eat the feast!  The crisp air of the day, along with snow, many times added to the merriment!

Then when I moved my family to Florida, we, of course, did not have these large celebrations any more.  However, the topic and spirit of the day was still Thanksgiving to God for blessings.  Today, I, my wife, Judy, her brother, Daniel,  daughter Michelle and grandkids Antonio and Jessica, will gather in Hollywood, Florida, with my niece Gaylynn, her husband David and children, Keriann, Kelsi and Peter.  It will be a day of fun, laughter, singing, joke and story telling  just like the past!

Gaylynn asked me to give a verse and prayer before dinner.  Well, I am going to the past for this!  When I was a camp counselor for many summers in Michigan, at mealtime we used to sing the JOHNNY APPLESEED GRACE SONG!  We will be singing that song again today!  Do you remember it?  OK, sing it with me now!

Oh, the Lord’s been good to me

And so I thank the Lord

For giving me the things I need

The sun, the rain and the appleseed;

Oh, the Lord’s been good to me.

PSALM 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name”.

Matt Redman, wrote and released a new song titled, TEN THOUSAND REASONS.   The chorus appears below.  Bless the Lord oh my soul,

Oh my soul

Worship His holy name

Sing like never before

Oh my soul

I worship your holy name.

On this day before Thanksgiving, I have many reasons to praise and thank Him like never before?  When Matt talks about writing this song, he said that he wanted to write and sing praise as NEVER before based on Psalm 103:1.  So many times, I say I am thankful, when at times the words just are that– words!  Today, however, I want  to say with Matt, I want to praise and thank God in a way like NEVER before!!

10,000 reasons to praise God?  All I know is that I believe HIS blessings to me are endless!  I want the words of another verse of the song to be my anthem today and tomorrow and tomorrow and………..

…For all your goodness I will keep on singing, 10,000 reasons for my heart to find!

What about you today?  How many blessings do you have?  Share them with others!

We have all heard that phrase before. Oh, they are nothing but do gooders! Well, consider this saying:

Do all the good you can

By any means you can

In all the ways you can

In all the places you can

At all the times you can

As long as ever you can

                                                     —-John Wesley, English Evangelist

Galatians 6: 9-10 (The Message Bible)     “So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up or quit.  Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith”.

Interesting!  Many times when we think of doing good, we only think of the poor and needy, which we most certainly should.  However, these verses say clearly that we should work for the benefit of ALL, starting with those closest to us in the community of faith, which means believers!  Wow, this certainly adds to the scope of those we are to help and do good.  This community, I believe, also includes the ones closest to us—our families!  Doing good not only consists of doing the BIG things, but whatever SMALL helps we can give.  Encouragement, prayer, what can we help with, etc. may just be what a person needs at that time!

Who needs help with whatever today?  Someone in your own household?  Your church?   Think about it, hug your wife and kids if you haven’t lately or make a call, visit a friend .  You might just “make their day” and be the one God uses to bless them   One thing is certain, you will never know until you reach out as we to do.  The blessings are waiting for you!!

When I taught language arts to my elementary school students, the emphasis was on writing.  I tried to explain how to make their writing come alive with descriptive words.  In the verse that I want to share today, I believe God used two words to drive home a real truth!   He, through His servant, Paul, wrote,  in Ephesians 3:20, “Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly, above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us”.

Did you get that?  We are not just to expect God to meet our needs, BUT, rather EXPECT Him to do EXCEEDINGLY, ABUNDANTLY, above all that we can even imagine or dream of!  What does this mean?  I believe it means just what it says and YOU will know it when it happens!  Believe me!  No one will have to tell you.  It has happened in my life and it will HAPPEN again!  FAITH is the key!

So, what are you seeking to do in your life or what problem or problems are you facing .   Today, we can and should choose to give them to GOD, who loves and cares so much and EXPECT Him to work in EXCEEDING, ABUNDANT ways!  Do you believe it? JUST DO IT!

Please share with me how God has answered your prayers or what I can pray about with you in the reply section below.

…….But, I DON’T WANT TO……

20 11 2011

Have you ever awoke in the morning worried about what is going to happen that day or thinking about problems that exist in your life?   Well, I did this morning!  My first thoughts centered on things that are happening that are causing me concern.   Are these problems going to be my focus and driving force this day? I whispered a prayer for help with this choice and then, what happened?  No great thunderbolt hit me or did I break into singing the Hallelujah Chorus, but a verse quietly came to me!   “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it”.  The reference is Psalm 118:24.

I sat on the edge of the bed thinking about this verse and knew I had to make a choice.  Would I continue to dwell upon them, (really over something that I had little control anyway!) or obey what this verse told me to do?  If you really read what is says, it is a COMMAND!   It says, we (I) WILL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT!  So, the ” I don’t want to” response is not the right answer!  It does not mean that the problem will be instantly solved or go away.  However, God says  to “rejoice and be glad” while going though this problem.  I do not know what the outcome will be,  but I do know I have the a choice to make. I can continue to worry and fret, or continue to pray and trust God for His solution in HIS way and time.

What are you worrying and anxious about ?  Join me in making the choice of rejoicing and being glad in what he has given us –TODAY!  God is at work even though it might not seem that He is!  Keep praying and trust Him for the outcome.

At the age of 40,  I, along with my wife, packed a semi trailer full of our stuff and along with our three children ages, 14,12 and 10 (and a cat!) and moved to Florida from Michigan.  I had received an offer to teach sixth grade in a Christian School and I believed God wanted me to move my family. It was very hard to leave family, many friends, our church and a school system we loved, but we left.  God gave us this verse, Joshua 1:9. “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage: be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee; wherever you go”.  How do you tell about what has happened during this stretch of time?  Words cannot adequately express all that has taken place during this time nor is there enough space to write about it all!

Shortly after arriving in Florida, the school where I was teaching underwent an extensive reorganization and it was necessary for me to leave. I tried so hard to secure another teaching position, but God had other plans for me and I entered the retail profession! Through these years, our children became adults, of course, married and began their own families. I had some serious health challenges, but God again gave me the verse, Jeremiah 29:11–“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end”.

So, God brought me to Florida to teach school (or so I thought) but as time has unfolded this was not His plan for me at all!  Through the years He has taught me many things due to all that has happened in my life since leaving Michigan. If the move was not made, I would not have learned the life lessons He has taught!

Thank you God, for what you have taught us, although all  things have not been easy or enjoyable.  You have not promised a life of ease, but that You would be with is in ALL things ! He will do the same for you along your life’s path wherever He takes you.

Psalm 16:11   “You will show me the path of life: In thy presence is fulness of Joy;  at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore”.

When Mel Fisher was searching for the lost treasure ship, “The Atocha”, each day he greeted the searchers with the greeting, “TODAY’S THE DAY”!  He was certain that they would be successful that day even though they had searched for what seemed an eternity!  This  search had also been very trying and many of the crew made many sacrifices in time, money, illness and some had even died! Yet, Max Fisher, their leader, pressed on and had faith to keep saying, TODAY”S THE DAY!

Yes, TODAY’S THE DAY!  A gift from GOD created for YOU and ME, although we have no idea what each day will bring.   What if things are not rosy and things happen that we do not expect?  Because GOD has given us this gift of another day, He will go through it with us no matter what— good or not so good.  His presence will be our comfort and help .  That is why we can live on in faith knowing our CAPTAIN  is in complete control!

TODAY’S THE DAY to thank and praise GOD for His faithful promises that are with us 24 hours each day! Thank Him and make your requests known. He is waiting to hear from you now.
